Maya Sialuk Jacobsen has an enormous need to, through her art, focus on the intangible cultural heritage that the Inuit from Greenland have lost – but also the parts of the original Inuit culture that go hand in hand with the new culture that was created under colonial Greenland.
3: INUIT-KUNST OG GRØNLANDSK NAVNETRADITION (10:20 min)
Da Maya Sialuk Jacobsen blev inviteret til at udstille på INUA, åbningsudstillingen på Qaumajuq/Inuit Art Centre i Winnipeg, Canada, stillede hun sig selv spørgsmålet: hvordan laver jeg inuit-kunst? Hun valgte at tage udgangspunkt i én af de oprindelige traditioner, som stadig stortrives i Grønland: navnearven, at give sine forfædres navne videre til sine børn.
3: INUIT ART AND GREENLANDIC NAME TRADITION (10:20 min)
When Maya Sialuk Jacobsen was invited to exhibit at INUA, the inaugural exhibition at the Qaumajuq/Inuit Art Center in Winnipeg, Canada, she asked herself the question: how do I make Inuit art? She chose to start from one of the original traditions, which still thrives in Greenland: name inheritance, passing on the names of your ancestors to your children.
4: OM DEN TREDJE KULTUR OG KOLLEKTIV IDENTITET (6:52 min)
I Danmark findes den tredjestørste population af inuit i verden – kun overgået af Grønland og Canada. Men dét at være grønlænder i Danmark er jo ikke det samme, som at være det i Grønland eller Canada. Der er en tredje kultur mellem den danske og den grønlandske, som ingen taler om, men som inuit-tatovør og kunstner Maya Sialuk Jacobsen mener, at vi har brug for at anerkende.
4: ON THE THIRD CULTURE AND COLLECTIVE IDENTITY (6:52 min)
Denmark has the third largest population of Inuit in the world – surpassed only by Greenland and Canada. But being a Greenlander in Denmark is not the same as being one in Greenland or Canada. There is a third culture that exists in-between the Danish and the Greenlandic, which no one talks about, but which Inuit tattoo artist and artist Maya Sialuk Jacobsen believes we need to acknowledge.

5: ON CARRYING YOUR CULTURE – on the inside or the outside (9:49 min)
As an Inuit tattoo artist, it is important to Maya Sialuk Jacobsen that indigenous tattoos are not used solely as an identity marker. These tattoos come with a story, a way of experiencing and understanding the world, which is important to know. In her upcoming exhibition, she will focus on this subject.

Maya Sialuk Jacobsen ser først og fremmest sig selv som historiefortæller, men introducerer oftest sig selv som privatforsker indenfor immateriel kulturarv – men bærer også 40 andre kasketter. Hun ville aldrig kunne klare at udtrykke sig kun i ét medie. Som velfungerende autist kører hendes hjerne med 100 km i timen det meste af tiden, men ved at udtrykke sig gennem det nonverbale, finder hendes hjerne et tiltrængt hvil.
6: ABOUT BEING A STORYTELLER – and sometimes an accountant (approx. 5:30 min)
Maya Sialuk Jacobsen sees herself first and foremost as a storyteller, but most often introduces herself as a private researcher within intangible cultural heritage – but she also wears 40 other hats. She would never be able to express herself through just one type of media. As a high-functioning autistic person, her brain runs at 100 km per hour most of the time, but by expressing herself through non-verbal language, her brain finds a much-needed rest.
